A floral-edged peach and apricot bouquet lures you in; in the mouth, juicy acidity freshens up silky apricot and pear flavors.
While many Viognier lovers prefer to enjoy their wine at the table, this Del Rio Viognier slips down easily as an apéritif, too. It’s terrific with seafood, pork and poultry dishes, especially those with creamy sauces or mild, warm spices (think ginger, coriander, cumin or clove).
Much of Oregon is too cool to grow grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Viognier, a Rhône variety that makes lush, fragrant whites redolent of flowers and stone fruits. But Del Rio Vineyards is located in the Rogue Valley, the warmest and driest of the state’s wine regions. Founders Lee and Margaret Traynham have made their 1,000-acre ranch into one of Oregon’s premiere sources of warm-climate grapes, selling their fruit to esteemed wineries such as Domaine Serene, Bethel Heights, Erath and Penner Ash. A few years ago the Traynhams got into the wine business themselves, converting a former apple-packing house into a small winery and hiring winemaker Jean-Michel Jussiaume. A native of the Loire Valley, Jussiaume excels with white wines, like this fresh, apricot-scented Viognier.
